Callaway Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X Golf Ball Reviews

Five-time Major winner and three times Masters Winner – Phil Michelson – has used Callaway equipment and is the face of the Callaway Chrome Soft golf ball on the PGA Tour.

This Chrome Soft X golf ball saved the day for Phil in his $9 million Las Vegas show down with Tiger Woods where Mickelson won in 22 holes after hitting a 93 yard wedge shot to 4 feet to clinch it.

Chrome Soft Feel Review

As advertised, the Chrome Soft is definitely a soft feeling golf ball. On putts it produced the lightest “thud” of golf balls I can recall testing.

Wedge shots felt soft and “grippy” which I actually really enjoyed when I was hitting chips deeper into the green and needed maximum spin to stop the ball quickly.

It’s funny and contradicting when you learn about Graphene which is used in creating these golf balls. Graphene is 200 times stronger than steel, yet the Chrome Soft still maintains one of the softest feels among all golf balls on the market.

It has already found its way into some shafts of golf clubs to strengthen them and in the Chrome Soft 2018 golf ball it provides the outer layer of the core to give it more strength.

Chrome Soft Visibility Technology

Truvis Pattern – Callaway’s specifically designed Truvis (true visibility) pattern, printed on the Chrome Soft, provides better visibility and focus of the ball off the clubface and during flight.

You can select white balls with red pattern or yellow balls with black pattern. This design makes them look alight like mini soccer balls, making it easy to spot your ball on the golf course.

Long Game Review

Fast Ball Speed Off The Driver – Callaway is the only golf ball company that has the new Dual Soft Fast Core. It’s engineered for fast ball speeds with low spin for players needing spin reduction to optimize their launch conditions off the tee.

The Dual Soft Fast Core features an exceptionally soft inner core surrounded by a firmer outer core. The inner core is soft for amateur golfers while the outer core is firmer helping better skilled golfers with higher swing speeds.

Hex Shaped Dimples – Callaway balls employ hex shaped dimples which they claim provides greater stability in the wind.

Low Compression For Incredibly Soft Feel – The Dual Soft Fast Core lets you compress the ball on iron shots for long, straight flight.

Our Thoughts

During our test, we didn’t see much difference in total distance off the tee when using the Callaway Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X.

We also compared the Chrome Soft X to the TP5X by TaylorMade and ProV1X by Titleist. For someone with a 90 to 100 mph swing speed there wasn’t much difference but it was less distance when swing speeds get higher like 105 mph and above.

We recommend the Chrome Soft ball for lower swing speed golfers while the Chrome Soft X is built for Tour Pro’s and higher swing speed golfers.

Short Game Review

The 4-piece construction, Dual SoftFast Core, mantle layer and Tour Urethane Cover all combine for even more control throughout the bag but most definitely in your wedges.

You will find extreme spin with your scoring clubs from inside 100 yards. An ultra-soft urethane outer cover gives the Chrome Soft its soft feel and exceptional grip off the clubface.

You’ll definitely like the spin that the Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X generate around the greens as well.

We noticed it grips on the second bounce pretty well if you tend to use the one hop stop golf shot in your short game often.

Price – How Much Do Chrome Soft Golf Balls Cost?

You can pick up a dozen balls on Amazon in the $30-$40 for both the Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X golf balls. This is an affordable price considering the performance of the golf ball is very comparable to the tour level balls, Titliest Pro V1 and TaylorMade TP5.
